Stop cases of violence on the part of the police

After the press reports and in-field fact findings from the Albanian Helsinki Committee in the district of Fier, it is made known that on November 1. 2003, about 22.00 hours, some police officials of the police alert group in  the district of Fier have maltreated the citizen Romeno Nexhipi.

AHC correspondent in Fier had a meeting with the victim and his family members and found that the citizen Romeno Nexhipi, resident in the neighborhood “16 Prilli”  in Fier as he left a bar in Fier being accompanied by two of his friends, has been stopped by police forces, who asked him to go with them. Romeno Nexhipi rejected this, by seeking to know the reason for his detention. After this reaction, the law enforcement officials, forced him into the van where they exerted violence by hitting and hurting him.

During the meeting with the victim in the place of the latter, our correspondent detected signs of violence on his back, ankle and on the face (on the eyebrow)

The bad condition caused by the violence used over him, made the police officials send the victim to the hospital to provide him the first aid, prior to sending him to the Police Station.

At 10.00 clock of the date November 2, 2003, the citizen Romeno, after having signed the declaration was released from the police forces.

AHC correspondent in Fier arranged a meeting with the Chief of the Police for the District of Fier. 0n his part, this act was condemnable and he made known that the case would be filed for prosecution.

Despite the circumstances of this occurrence. Albanian Helsinki Committee highlights that physical violence in no case can be legitimized.

Albanian Helsinki Committee publicly denounces the aforementioned case by appealing to the relevant bodies to hastily and objectively investigate this case.

Albanian Helsinki Committee witnessing reoccurrence of the cases of violence on the part of the police voices this concern and seeks from the bodies of the Ministry of Public Order to take appropriate action for the prevention of such arbitrary cases legally condemnable and for cleansing the police ranks from officials who themselves violate the law.
