TWO CASES OF THE USE OF VIOLENCE FROM KUKĖS POLICE

The Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC) correspondent in Kukės informs that there have been two cases of the illegal use of violence from police. At the meeting the correspondent held in 22.02.2002 with the sentenced person named Bledar Halili held at the pre-detention rooms, it resulted that he was maltreated and hit some times by the chief of crimes and some policemen because he made noise.

The second case comes from 19.04.2002 when near the village of Kalimash there was stopped citizen Martin Prenga as suspected for stealing hunting dogs. In 22.04.2002 the AHC correspondent personally contacted detained Martin Leka who complained that police forces had exerted violence by hitting him in the body and the head at the moment of detention. Another violation was the fact that he was not communicated the right of defence with a lawyer.

Together with the information the correspondent has also brought the complaint from the detained person’s family for this maltreatment.

As such cases are repeated ones the AHC asks the proper institutions to undertake fast and efficient steps to give an end to such arbitrary actions.
