Strengthening cooperation between civil society
and state institutions – indispensable for
better respect for the rights of the Roma
minority and the Egyptian community in Albania

In the context of contributing to
better respect for human rights in general and
minorities in particular, the Albanian Helsinki
Committee, in cooperation with the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, organized on December 7, 2007,
the round table discussion on “Strengthening
cooperation between civil society and state
institutions – indispensable for better respect
for the rights of the Roma minority and the
Egyptian community in Albania.”
Participants
at the roundtable presented the variety of
problems of the Roma minority and the Egyptian
community, seen from the standpoint of standards
established by international conventions and
recommendations of the European Commission
Against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI); actions
by the civil society and its initiatives in the
area of minorities. Participants had the
opportunity to identify joint actions and
initiatives of the civil society and state
institutions for better lobbying in protection
of the rights of the Roma minority and the
Egyptian community.
Participating in the round table
were representatives of the Roma minority and
the Egyptian community, state institutions,
local and international organizations, etc.
