Training of the newly recruited staff in penitentiary institutions started

 

On 21-23 April 2008, AHC organized two parallel training targeting newly recruited uniform staff in the Fushë-Kruja prison that is duly to open soon. The main objective of this training was to raise the professional capacities of the uniform staff of this institution by providing them with operational knowledge on how prison should function in the daily practice and how to provide a humane treatment to persons deprived of their liberty.

International experts invited to give their contribution and expertise in these trainings were Mr. Boeij Cees, Mr. De Groen Theo, Mr. Poll Kees, Mr. Van Den Brand Jan, Mr. Verschure Hattinga Joost. The topics covered in this training were: mission and vision of the penitentiary system in Albania , the organisational structure of a prison, care of staff: recruitment and basic training, professional skills and attitude of staff towards prisoners, creating a safe life climate, communication structure; use of force, handling conflicts, differentiation of prisoners, daily activities; Code of Conduct as the integrity policy in prisons; prisoners contacts with the outside world; disciplinary policy, requests and complaints; different protocols on suicide, infectious diseases etc.

Trainees participated into different workgroup discussions during the whole program and a study tour in the new prison was also provided during the training. Nearly 78 newly recruited uniform staff were trained and provided with the certificate for fully completion of this basic training. Based on the evaluation carried out by the trainees, the trainings fulfilled its objectives and were highly appreciated for both theoretical and practical approach.
