For a better cooperation between Roma and Egyptian minority with local institutions

06.02.2009

Aiming to encourage the better cooperation between local government and representatives of Roma and Egyptian minorities, Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC) and Center for Social and Economic Studies (CESS) organized joint forums in Elbasan and Korça on 4 and 5 February 2009. These forums aimed to improve the bridges of communication and cooperation between state local institutions and Roma and Egyptian minorities; support the drafting of local strategies for improving of their live conditions, employment, education and housing.

In each forum, the representatives of municipality, council of Municipality, education directory, police, local employment office, and representatives of local actors and organizations working on Roma and Egyptian minorities participated and contributed with their discussions. In these forums, the participants expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation between them and to coordinate the efforts of all different actors aiming for a better integration of these communities in society. In the end of the forums the representatives of the local government succeeded to encourage setting up of different important decisions in favor of Roma and Egyptian minorities.

AHC and CESS will present the main conclusions of these forums to responsible state institutions in central level.

The forums have been organized as part of project “Increasing access of the Roma community in local government through a new model of communication” financially supported by the Open Society Foundation for Albania (SOROS).
