Final trainings of the newly recruited staff in penitentiary institutions in Korça and Vlora

22.06.209

On 12-13 May 2009, and on 12-14 May 2009 AHC organized two parallel trainings targeting newly recruited uniform staff in Korça prison and Vlora pre detention center. The main objective of this training was to raise the professional capacities of the uniform staff of these institutions by providing them with operational knowledge on how prison should function in the daily practice and how to provide a humane treatment to persons deprived of their liberty.

Trainees participated into different workgroup discussions during the whole program. Nearly 51 newly recruited uniform staff were trained and provided with the certificate for fully completion of this basic training, at both institutions. Based on the evaluation carried out by the trainees, the trainings fulfilled its objectives and were highly appreciated for both theoretical and practical approach.

International experts invited to give their contribution and expertises in these trainings were Mr. Jan van den Brand, Mr. Cees Boeij and Mr. Kees Poll.  The topics covered in this training were: mission and vision of the penitentiary system in Albania; the organisational structure of a prison, care of staff; recruitment and basic training; professional skills and attitude of staff towards prisoners; creating a safe life climate; communication structure; use of force, handling conflicts; differentiation of prisoners; daily activities; Code of Conduct as the integrity policy in prisons; prisoners contacts with the outside world; disciplinary policy; requests and complaints; different protocols on suicide; infectious diseases etc.
