Albanian Helsinki Committee invited to participate in the BBC auditorium

 27.01.2007

On Saturday, January 27, 2007, Ms. Vasilika Hysi, AHC Executive Director, was invited to the “Auditorium” television program.

Invited to the program were also Mr. Dashamir Shehi, NDM Chairman, Mr. Pandeli Majko, SP General Secretary, Prof.Dr. Nikoleta Mita, lecturer at the Social Sciences Faculty, and Mr. Shpëtim Nazarko, publisher of ABC newspaper.

Elections, the election campaign, and the electricity crisis were the topics addressed during the show.

To questions from the panel about the conflicting climate between the political parties and the fact that campaigns feature more accusations than alternatives, Ms. Hysi responded that the situation derives from the maturity level of the political class, the level of democratic development, and the fact that voters themselves do not request governance alternatives from the political class. The need to increase the pressure of the civil society and other actors on the political class was emphasized during the public debate.

Another issue addressed during the show was transparency on political parties campaign financing. Panelists and Ms. Hysi were of the opinion that there is no transparency on election campaign financing although there is a legal obligation for it.

With regard to the electricity crisis, AHC expressed the view that, among other things, political reforms during the transition years have harmed KESH (Energy Corporation) management. Besides, aside from the lack of strategies, there is also an underestimation of specialized experts by the political class. This situation leads to consequences in respecting the most elementary rights of citizens by the state.
