A shameful
and tendentious attack against the human rights activist
and defender of rule of law principles in Albania
03.06.2008
One of the daily newspapers, for several days now, has
been attacking in a tendentious way one of Albania's
human rights activists and defender of the principles of
the rule of law, Mr. Niazi Jaho. The presented claims
are untrue, a distortion of reality, and intentional.
Mr. Jaho is a member of the Albanian Helsinki Committee
since 1995. A jurist by profession, he has had and has
the civil courage to defend human rights and freedoms;
he is a researcher and critic of Albanian legislation
and issues of constitutionality in Albania.
Prevent
violence in stadiums
On May 11, 2008, at the stadium of Gjirokastėr, the
football match between the teams of Delvinė and Sarandė
was held. After the Delvinė team scored a goal, players
walked to a net in front of the stadium steps to
celebrate with their fans. At that moment, police
intervened violently and, as a result, 3 persons were
wounded. Two of those are still in hospital.
On the way
toward European integration, Albania has a lot to do for
respect for human rights

High

are trained
On
24 January 2008 AHC with its international expert Mr.
Jan van den Brand introduced an effective tool of
measuring the climate and treatment of prisoners with
humanity in prisons as well as treated another very
important issue like the role of the governors in the

Support
provided to the drafting process of the Action Plan of
the Training Center of Prisons (TCP)
On
4 April 2006 AHC and its experts, Vesna Babic and Jan
van den Brand studied the preliminary draft of the
Action Plan of the TCP for the year 2008-2010. Experts
offered concrete suggestions to improve the plan so that
it could be definitive, in order to have a concrete
document that can prescribe the transformation of the
training section into a real training center. Its
expected that the working group from the GDP to finalize
the Action Plan and allocate budgeting recourses to this
document, in order to make possible the desired
transformation.
