More self-control in the statements addressed to institutions
Tiranë, December 10. 2003
Albanian
Helsinki Committee with great concern observes that political party leaders or
representatives show no restraint as to their criticism and remarks addressed to
constitutional institutions. They frequently prejudice their activity simply
based on their narrow party interests.
It was unacceptable and inappropriate that the Socialist Party leader
immediately after the decision of the Electoral College of the Court of Appeal
in Tirana, about the repetition of the elections in 118 polling stations,
accused it as a corrupt body.
It s also unacceptable that the Democratic Party leader and other
representatives from this party, continue to use violent statements and
unevidenced charges from the powerful bodies against the Central Electoral
Commission. This biased unrestraint is obviously a violation of the essential
principle of the presumption of innocence sanctioned by the European Convention
of Human Rights in our Constitution.
Albanian Helsinki Committee also denounces hate speech regardless of the fact if
it is used either from the left or right wing. It is worth highlighting that
such phenomena are not in compliance with the standards of a society and
democratic country aspiring to integration in the large European family.
