Stop hate speech in politics
3.12.2003
There is a tense atmosphere created in the country due to the confrontation of
the political forces with the most acute daily problems. This escalating tension
threatens to violate the stability and darken the perspective in the eyes of the
public opinion. It is obvious that facing the recent events, the political
parties of the political spectrum define their attitudes and introduce their
relevant choices.
AHC shares the conviction, concern and opinion nationwide when it calls for
attention on the situation created and appeals to the political forces and
especially to the two major political parties, to unfold their alternatives by
using a reasonable language instead of hate speech.
AHC has long denounced hate speech as a factor that poisons the political
environment. Moreover it is the case to show regret about hate speech of our
distinguished politicians, that speak on the behalf of the relevant political
parties. Mention is made of corruption, organized crime and mafia activity. No
mention is made of concrete evidence and the principle of presumption of
innocence is completely violated, thus ignoring the powerful bodies that
prosecute crimes and do justice.
AHC voices the conviction that the created situation of the limitless usage of
hate speech addressed to each-other, does not contribute to the serious
treatment and substantial settlement of the great problems for the development
of the country towards democracy and integration at a European level.
AHC reiterates the appeal that the debate must focus on the real problems the
country is facing and not with charges issued inappropriately against
each-other. Political parties need to adapt to the wider public opinion that
anxiously attends the harmful turn that the political life has taken.
