PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE PROGRESS OF THE GENERAL ELECTIONS PROCESS OF JULY 3, 2005 IN ALBANIA

Ordeal of the Albanian migrants at the border with Greece goes on

After a new wave of the Albanian migrants influx at the border checkpoints in Kapshtica and Kakavija, the same tensed situation prevails. Thousands of migrants with their families are blocked at the border, they confront very distressing problems. Women in waiting, kids infected by various diseases. It is recently reported that a 63-year woman passed away in Kakavija.

AHC at the very beginning has denounced the disregard of the Greek authorities for an inadequate commitment of the Albanian authorities to reach a rapid and final solution. Confronted with this real ordeal of thousands of migrants forced to wait for days on end for a seal at the border, AHC reaffirms its denouncing attitude. Once again the responsibility emerges and it is the Greek authorities that are creating a new crises within a week.

A special appeal is made to the Albanian authorities to act in order to make the due attempts nearby the highest level authorities of Athens, to give an end to this situation, which in many cases during these days was interpreted as a discrimination against Albanians and an expression of the Anti-Albanian psychosis.

No need to echo these interpretations, we contest that what is happening at the border with Greece is in open contradiction with the elementary norms of human rights.

AHC addresses to its counterpart in Greece as well, Helsinki Greek Observer to undertake a awareness campaign against these arbitrary attitudes, thus denouncing the unacceptable behaviour of the Greek border authorities.

The ordeal of the Albanian migrants must be over.
