Report of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and the inhuman and degrading treatment regarding Greece

The above mentioned Committee is entitled to look at the situation in every European country in regard to the violations occurred.

The report points out a series of violations committed by the Greek police in border areas as well as in the prisons.  The Committee has mentioned inhuman and degrading treatment of Albanian citizens by Greek police.  Emigrants in particular are ill-treated, especially those who are Albanians.

The Greek Helsinki Monitor, while making known to the Albanian Helsinki Committee the above-mentioned report, has at the same time underlined that this is a case of widespread xenophobia in the behavior of the Greek police.  "Albanophobia" of the Greek officials is denounced.

The Greek Helsinki Monitor adds that the conclusions reached by it about prohibition of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment are fully confirmed by the latest investigations undertaken together with Amnesty International and the International Helsinki Federation.
