Respect for
emigrants rights
Due to the Easter
holidays, the border crossings with Greece experienced a flood of Albanian
emigrants. During May 2005, the AHC correspondents in Korēė and Gjirokastėr
conducted monitoring missions in the border crossing points of Kakavijė and
Kapshticė. They contacted the commaner of the border crossing post and conducted
interviews mainly with Albanian emigrants being sent back by Greek police on the
grounds of irregularities in documents, or of illegal border crossing.
During September 2005,
the AHC received a complaint from an emigrant in Ireland, Gj.S, who complained
about violation of his procedural rights in Ireland and about the refusal (of
authorities) to grant him emigrant status. The AHC alerted IOM and UNHCR to the
complaint so they might refer it to Irish authorities. |
