Two
prestigious organizations denounce the grave violations of
human rights in Greece
It
is reported a lot in the press that two international organizations
of human rights, Amnesty International and Helsinki International
Federation have denounced in a special report human rights
violations in Greece.
Among
many victims a special attention is focused on the Albanian migrants
that have very often been objects of violence in various
circumstances. AHC completely shares solidarity with the above
report not mentioning the fact that it has time and again presented
many cases of maltreatment of Albanian migrants.
First,
there have been denounced cases when they have suffered the
consequences of an Anti-Albanian psychosis and in many cases
discrimination on racial prejudices. AHC had no possibility to
observe the situation in field for reasons easily comprehended. But
AHC has continuously had complaints by many migrants that have been
confronted with the violence of Greek Police during their stay in
different districts of Greece. Particularly grave have been the
violent acts that have been used to the detriment of the Albanian
migrants at the border. Recent events have been an obvious proof.
Besides
these violations, AHC received as well complaints by Albanian
prisoners serving sentence in Greek prisons. Although not being able
to set direct contacts, nevertheless we managed to get data, letters
and phone calls about cruel treatment in comparison with other
prisoners. Frequently they have demanded their repatriation in
Albania to serve their sentence here.
In
these circumstances, AHC attracts authorities attention on this
problem that after the above report is presented as an acute one. It
is expected that this case be object of negotiations between the
competent bodies from both parties concerned. This is a rights step
to be taken if we consider the Friendship Treaty signed between two
countries in March 1996, in which Greek minority in Albania and
Albanian migrants in Greece are qualified as a bridge in a
continuous development of the bilateral relations.
