Some
indicators of AHCs activity

AHC, the first human rights organization in Albania, promoter of the
protection of human rights in the country and the region.

On March 22. 1992 AHC became member of the International Federation
for Human Rights;

The Albanian Helsinki Committee, as one of the countrys first
lobbying organizations, has been very active in providing critique
toward amendments of legal packages, draft laws, etc., thus improving
the Albanian legal framework and bringing it closer to international
standards.

Through the organization of round table discussions and conferences
with experts of different law areas, the AHC has encouraged
professional debate for the improvement of the Albanian legal
framework and its practice. Only during 2004, these round table
discussions and conferences were followed by 72 print and electronic
media outlets around the country and beyond.

Throughout its activity, the Albanian Helsinki Committee has set the
Constitutional Court to motion 8 times, contributing through its legal
experience for Albanian legislation to be in full conformity with our
Constitution and international standards and human rights.

The creation of a seven-member network of correspondents in the
countrys main cities brought the AHC closer to the ordinary citizen,
particularly in the countrys rural areas.

The programs of the Committee have not only led to greater awareness
of state authorities for better respect for human rights, but have
also created work models for involving the public administration, for
instance the prisons administration, in drafting the sub-legal
framework in these institutions as well as in boosting their
accountability in enforcing the law.

In 2001 AHC has become member of the regional network of the NGOs in
Balkan Human Rights Network (BHRN).

The AHC Executive Director was elected member of the International
Helsinki Federation Executive Board. This election represents a
recognition of the AHCs contribution in the region and beyond, as is
a personal achievement of the Committees Director.

During 2004, the Albanian Helsinki Committee devoted great attention
and special care to the organizations restructuring with a view to
strengthening it further. As a result, the Committee succeeded in
setting up three units in its internal organization: the program unit,
the monitoring and legal counseling unit and the administrative and
finances unit.

At a national and international level, AHC has increased the pool of
its collaborators depending on the initiatives undertaken in human
rights areas as well as on AHCs statute. AHCs transparency has been
increased;
- In 2004 AHC became member of the international
Consortium operating in Albania;
