During October 15 – 16, 2009, the Albanian Helsinki
Committee, with support from Civil Right Defenders
(former Swedish Helsinki Committee), organized the
training program on “Legal and practical aspects of
articles 6, 13 and 14 of the European Convention on
Human Rights (ECHR) and the jurisprudence of the
European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).” The event
was a continuation of training programs AHC has
organized in recent years on the European Convention
and the jurisprudence of the ECHR.

trains the representatives of NGOs and local media
in Durrёs regarding the Convention and European
Court of Human Rights

On 3 June 2009, Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC)
has undertaken a training with representatives of
local Non-profit organization and media in the city
of Durrёs. The main aim of the training was
increasing the capacities of the participants
regarding some practical and theoretical aspects of
the European Convention and European Court of Human
Rights.

On 14 may 2009, Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC)
has undertaken a training with representatives of
local Non-profit organization and media in the city
of Fier. The main aim of the training was increasing
the capacities of the participants regarding some
practical and theoretical aspects of the European
Convention and European Court of Human Rights.

European Court of Human Rights

On
24 December 2008 AHC
organized a training targeting some of
representatives of written and electronic media
concerning the implementation of the European
Convention of Human Rights and the European
Court of Human Rights at national level. The
main objective of this training was to raise
professional capacities of the representatives
of written and electronic media on the topic:
the role of judicial system in accordance with
European Convention of Human Rights and the
activity of European Court of Human Rights.
MONITORING
Monitoring missions to police commissariats,
detention institutions, and prisons to observe
respect for the rights of juveniles

During the period January – March 2009, AHC
conducted 17 planned and sporadic monitoring
missions at detention institutions, prisons, and
police commissariats. These missions engaged AHC
staff and experts. The main goal of these planned
missions.
FREE LEGAL AID
Offering legal assistance in cases of violations of
citizens’ rights

During the period January – February, AHC reviewed
58 complaints and letters on different topics such
as the right to due legal process, the rights of
persons deprived of liberty, conditions in detention
institutions, minority rights, social and economic
rights, etc.
SENSITIZING ACTIVITIES
Sensitizing activities for juveniles in prison
(juveniles’ section at the Vaqarr prison, pre-trial
detention institution in Shën Koll Lezhë)

During the implementation of the project of the
legal clinic 2008-2009, AHC, in cooperation with the
Albanian NGO “Children today,” organized two
sensitizing events, respectively on February 19 and
24, 2009, with 12 juveniles at the Vaqarr prison and
10 juveniles at the Shën Koll detention institution.

During the period February – March 2009, AHC
published a leaflet in Albanian on “Pardons and
procedures.” The leaflet features information about
pardon procedures, needed documents, eligible
persons, relevant institutions, etc. The leaflet was
printed in 3,000 copies and was distributed among
convicts.
