Improvement of the justice system for juveniles

 

Round table of the Ministry of Justice, UNICEF, and the AHC on “Justice for juveniles –the present and the perspective”

 

 

On 18 January 2005, the Ministry of Justice, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Albanian Helsinki Committee, organized the round table “Justice for juveniles – the present and the perspective”.

The round table sought to make public the undertaking of legal measures and measures for their implementation in practice with a view to improving the justice system for juveniles.

 

Different civil society representatives gave some of their recommendations on the legal package proposed by the Ministry of Justice. Issues addressed at the round table discussion included: changing the age limit for penal responsibility; issuance of alternative punishments; treatment of the category of persons between 18 – 21 years old (jeune adult); educational and medical measures; specialization of judicial bodies; infrastructure in detention facilities and prisons; protection of juveniles against illegal arrests; etc, which were followed by numerous discussions by those present.

 

Participating in the round table were representatives of state institutions working on juvenile rights covering the legislative and practice area of this topic, as well as civil society representatives who target the protection of juvenile rights.
