Respect for the rights of detainees in the Korçë police station
In the context of supporting and evaluating the network of
correspondents and the protection of the rights of detainees and convicts, the
Committee carried out a monitoring mission in the Korçë police station in July
2005.
During the meeting, Committee representatives held meetings
with the head of the police station, the commander, and the officer responsible
for detainees in custody at this police station, as well as with other employees
of the police station. The Committee also conducted a monitoring mission in the
premises of the police station and also held a series of meetings with detainees
kept in the station.
The monitoring mission found poor conditions in the police
station's facilities, delays in the transfer of persons convicted through a
final court decision, the lack of lawyers in some cases, the lack of a medical
doctor in necessary cases, as well as problems with judicial procrastinations,
etc.
In the course of the monitoring mission, convicts, detainees,
and the police station's administration, which had felt the continued pressure
of the AHC on improving the human rights situation in the institution, applauded
the active role of the Committee's Korçë correspondent.
