Project Monitoring respect for emigrants’ rights”
Implementation period: January-December 2004
Funded by: Norwegian Helsinki Committee

 

The goal of the project was to address cases of maltreatment of Albanian emigrants and sensitize Greek and Albanian authorities about better respect for the rights of emigrants and the reinstatement of violated rights.

 

Concrete project objectives

  • Identify cases of maltreatment of Albanian emigrants by Greek and Albanian police, and then denounce them.

  • Sensitize Albanian and Greek institutions for better respect of emigrants’ rights.

  • Legal assistance for victims of police violence in Greece and Albania.

 Activities carried out in the context of the project

  1. Identification, contact with, and legal assistance for persons who were victims of maltreatment by Greek or Albanian police.

  2. Sensitization of the Albanian and Greek public opinion for respect of emigrants rights.

  3. Denunciation of cases of violence and xenophobia in the Greek media through press conferences.

  4. Informing emigrants about rules of crossing border points.

  5. Monitoring respect for emigrants’ rights in border crossing points to Greece.

Project Results:

  • Denunciation of cases of maltreatment of Albanian emigrants.

  • Provision of legal assistance to part of the victims.

  • Sensitization of the Greek and Albanian media about the treatment of emigrants.

  • Collaboration with Amnesty International and the Greek Helsinki Committee in following maltreatment cases, denunciation of these cases, and reinstatement of violated rights, increased.

The Albanian Helsinki Committee assures the anonimousity until the moment when the person desires to publish his data
